When a company builds a communications network connecting every point in a big country like Thailand, it's not an easy job.
So the decision about what technology to use has to be right.
The technology could well be out-of-date by the time the network is completed if the wrong choice is made.
Either the company will lose a lot of money or the people of Thailand will have to operate with a technology far behind other countries.
Motorola and several other prominent companies are pushing for the wireless Wimax technology to go from its current trial status in Phuket to commercial status immediately.
In the US Sprint corporation is using Wimax right now to deliver broadband directly to people whereever they are, in a restaurant, walking down the street, in a park, not just at home or at work like traditional internet access.
Motorola is currently implementing its 19th Wimax installation and is currently working on 77 contracts in 44 countries.
Wimax can be different things in different situations.
In Pakistan where there was no regular telephone network to begin with, there was a sudden and surprising 160% growth in internet penetration.
In India Wimax has shifted data traffic (internet users) from the 2G line to Wimax, freeing up bandwidth for more voice traffic (people talking on the telephone.
Wimax allows a lot more to be done with the same amount of spectrum and is better for lower cost fast broadband internet.
The immediate goal is high bandwidth, low-latency instant connections for people using social networking sites like Facebook and video sharing sites like Youtube.
There's no real reason to wait, according to the experts, the time to start is right now.
