Ikea furniture adds
retail investment to its
Manufacturing operations in Thailand

In
September 2008 the Swedish furniture company Ikea signed a five-year OEM
production contract
with SPS Group, a Thai furniture maker, to supply board-based
furniture
to Ikea. SPS Group has been supplying furniture to Ikea for almost 20 years.
SPS normally supplies Ikea with furniture worth about 5 billion baht each year. But the company has recently secured orders from Ikea worth 15 billion baht - about 25% of the value of the country's total furniture exports per year.
Under the new September contract, SPS Group is set to produce 5,000 containers of board-based furniture for Ikea every year, mainly for the Asian market. Before the new Ikea contract, SPS produced around 3,000 containers, more than 90% of this for export markets.
Thailand is endowed with an abundant supply of rubber trees and rubber wood used as a raw material in the manufacture of furniture. This gives Thai exporters an edge over the competition in other countries.

Expansion into Asia-Pacific market
Ikea's sales breakdown as follows: Europe (70%), North America (20%), and Asia-Pacific (10%). The leading markets in the Asia-Pacific region are Australia, Japan and China.Relatively low market penetration in the Asia-Pacific market makes it an ideal region to target sales expansion in. Ikea is looking to the Asian market to offset plummeting sales in the recession-plagued US market. Worldwide, the board-based furniture market is growing by 10% every year.

Retail expansion in Thailand
Ikea has 300 stores in 35 countries.Siam Future Development Plc (SF) yesterday announced a joint venture with foreign and Thai partners to develop a 10-billion-baht home furnishing centre.
The company Ikano Private has the franchise rights for Ikea in Singapore and Malaysia and operates two stores in Singapore and one store in Malaysia.
In the new joint venture SF Development and Ikano will both hold 49% stakes each with SPS holding the remaining 2%.
Construction will start at the Mega Bang Na complex in the third quarter of this year and the centre is scheduled to open by October 2011
Mega Bang Na will be on a 290-rai plot on the Bang Na-Trat KM 9, Kanchanaphisek outer ring road and will have a total space of about 200,000 square metres. Its features will include a 40,000-sq-m Ikea store, a department store, branded fashion outlets, restaurants, an IT centre, an entertainment centre and parking for 8,000 cars.

The project is expected to create 20,000 jobs and also to generate business opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.
The company anticipates that Mega Bang Na will attract 40 million visitors annually and will generate 1.4 billion baht in revenue in its first year.
Ikano plans to open two more Ikea stores in Thailand over the next 10 years. Each store will require an investment of 3.5-4 billion baht.
