Thai fishing boats set to expand operations in foreign waters

By Jon Fernquest

fishing boatThailand has a huge fleet of 1,000 vessels fishing in foreign waters such as the Red Sea off the coast of Africa.

Fish stocks in Thai waters have dropped "to 2.1 million tonnes in 2007, from an average of 2.4 million to 2.7 million over the previous decade."

Thai fishing boats have had to find new places to fish.

Because these Thai fishing boats work with local foreign partners they have had to demonstrate that they will fish in a sustainable way and not exhaust or excessively deplete the fish stocks in an area.

Today's article is an extract from a larger article. The article begins after the vocabulary.

Thailand's Fisheries Department will seek closer co-operation with more countries in the Middle East and Africa to build a broader base for a sustainable fishing industry.

A team led by director-general Somying Piumsombun will soon visit Saudi Arabia to explore the possibility of allowing Thai vessels to catch fish in the Arabian Gulf and the Red Sea.

vessels - ships เรือขนาดใหญ่

Eritrea, with an extensive Red Sea coastline, is one of the African countries being considered. All of the potential locations, suggested by local fishing concerns operating abroad, have high investment potential, with rich resources but underexploited production

Thailand must demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, says Dr Somying.

extensive - includes a wide are or variety ที่มีมากมาย
coastline - land along the ocean, next to the ocean

The capability of Thai fishermen in the global industry is renowned, with more than 1,000 vessels engaged in industrial fishing in foreign waters, said Dr Somying.

She said the expansion was part of the department's five-year operating plan to lift overseas fishing and fishery production to 1.5 million tonnes a year between 2009 and 2013.

capability - the ability to do something ความสามารถ
global - throughout the world ทั่วโลก
renowned - famous and admired for a special skill or achievement ที่มีชื่อเสียง

...Dr Somying said that given the concern about depletion of fish stocks in many countries, Thailand needed show foreign partners it intended to promote a sustainable industry

Depletion of stocks has stemmed largely from overfishing and the use of improper tools in which many types of fish besides those specifically sought are caught.

concern - a worry ความกังวล
depletion - reduction การทำให้ลดลง

intended - planned; wanted to happen ที่ได้วางแผนไว้ ที่ตั้งใจให้เกิดขึ้น

depletion of stocks - reducing the number of fish in a body of water

specifically - in an exact and detailed way

Marine output has also fallen at home, with the volume of fish caught in Thai waters dropping to 2.1 million tonnes in 2007, from an average of 2.4 million to 2.7 million over the previous decade.

The National Fisheries Association reported catches in the Gulf of Thailand had declined to only 17.8 kilogrammes per hour on average this year, compared with 40.59 kg in 1987, 62.1 kg in 1977 and 298 kg in the early 1960s...

volume - the quantity or amount of something
decade - a period of ten years ทศวรรษ, ระยะเวลา 10 ปี
