Proactive

proactive (adj) - This is a very popular word in management and psychology. It is difficult to given one exact meaning because the word has slightly different meanings for different people. Here are some of the meanings:

1. Solving problems before they occur.

2. Acting in advance to deal with expected difficulties.

3. To actively take control and responsibility for one's life, rather than passively looking for causes in outside circumstances or other people.

4. To act before a situation becomes a crisis.

5. Acting in advance to cause change and improvement, rather than merely passively reacting to events

Proactive has a history of about 60 years. The idea of being "proactive" was first popularized by the psychologist Viktor Frankl in his book Man's Search for Meaning which discusses the author's experiences in a Nazi concentration camp and how he finally found a reason to keep living despite the terrible circumstances he found himself in. Being "proactive" is also the first good habit of the best-selling book "Seven habits of highly effective people." This book is really what made the word popular.
