Pending

pending (adj) - (formal, legal language)
a. waiting
b. going to happen soon
c. a problem waiting to be solved (dealt with, settled),
d. waiting for a future event before solving the problem

"Pending" basically means "waiting". The word is usually used in formal legal settings together with other common legal words, as you can see in the example sentences below. In today's news, the committee investigating the Shin sale is waiting to release a report, so today's newspaper uses legal language:

"The report has remained sealed pending a broader inquiry into the use of nominee companies by foreign investors."


Example sentences:

* The politician had a criminal defamation case pending against the magazine.

* The court has an overload with over 800 pending cases.

* The murder suspect is in jail pending his trial.

* The judge suspended the company from selling the product pending an investigation into patent violations.

* Taxi drivers are worried about the pending oil price increases.

* Patent pending.
(On products this means that the product has a patent filed and is waiting for approval)

* All construction of nuclear has been halted pending a review of nuclear power ordered by the Government last year

* Pending his hearing, the accused embezzler stayed with his mother.

* The ex-con was on bail pending his trial for fraud.

* The results are held over pending an enquiry.

* A number of other civilians and military men are still being held, pending investigations by the authorities.

* Opposition factions have agreed to form a Supreme National Council pending UN-supervised elections.

* She is out on bail pending her appeal.

* Another proposal, which the committee is now inviting public comment on another proposal pending a final report next year.

* The phrase "pending clarification of the company's financial position" had an ominous ring to it.

* The court insisted she had to stay in France pending an extradition hearing.

* They refused to comment pending further talks on the crisis.

* The heavyweight champion will have his licence suspended pending the inquiry.

* He still has a case pending against him.

* The company's shares were suspended at yesterday's price, pending the outcome of refinancing talks.

* He has a court action pending over his contract which is due to be heard on December 13.

* Bobby's body was taken to a nearby mortuary, to remain there pending further instructions from his family.

* A class-action suit against the department store on behalf of employees is pending.

* Lawsuits are still pending from the company's last airplane crash.

* The pending breakup of the company made the headlines last week.
