Hype

hype (noun) - sensational and exaggerated promotion of a product (usually has a slightly negative meaning)

* All the hype generated huge sales within weeks.

* As the opening of the new Suvarnabhumi airport draws near, the media hype is increasing daily.

* The product was a complete dud, unable to match its pre-launch hype.

* After all the hype for the diet plan, I didn't lose any weight at all.

* Ignore all the advertising hype and read some good product reviews
before you buy the product.

* Viral marketing can generate a lot of promotional hype for a product before the product launch.

* There was so much promotional hype in the product review that I couldn't read it.

* Sometimes companies start believing their own hype and produce useless products.

* Before the World heavyweight Championship there was a lot of pre-fight hype.

* Forget all the hype and just see the product for what it is.

* It's difficult to see through the thick fog of Hollywood's hype machine.

hype (verb) - to promote heavily
* They started hyping the new magazine months before its release.


media hype (noun) - when media coverage of an event is greater than the real importance of the event (See Wikipedia on Media Circus)

technology hype - unjustified, excessive discussion and usage of a technology or technology concept. (See Wikipedia)

Gartner's Hype Cycle - a concept that the Gartner consulting created to help business people separate the hype from usefulness of a new technology so they can decide whether to invest in it (See Gartner's page and graph)


Other uses:

hyper- (word prefix) - over, excessive

to hype up (verb) - to make people excited about something
* Before the sales people made sale presentations they hyped each other up to get excited the product they were about to sell.

hyped up (adj) - to get very excited and anxious about something
* We got so hyped up about buying the car that we couldn't sleep.

hyper (adj) - overly excited and energetic
* I was incredibly hyper at the rock concert. I jumped up and down.

hyperactive (adj) - always moving around and doing things, cannot sit down and relax (this word has a negative meaning since the most common usage is "hyperactive children", sometimes an illness)
