Begin by watching the highlights of the match at fifa.com

Denmark 2 Cameroon 1

cmloseCameroon are officially the first side to pack their bags and head for home after a narrow 2-1 loss to Denmark. The result also sees Holland through safely to the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Africans started the match with a bang, attacking right from the first whistle with skill and flair to spare. The pressure proved too much for the Danes after only nine minutes as Cameroon took the lead.

A slack pass from C.Poulson was picked up on the left wing by Webo and delivered to the feet of the prolific Samuel Eto’o. The Inter Milan hitman was in acres of space and smashed the ball into the bottom left hand corner past Thomas Sorensen to give his side the lead.

Cameroon continued to dominate, if another goal was coming, you’d have expected it to come from the Africans. They kept attacking at a fast tempo and looked to have Denmark on the ropes. However, the Europeans levelled the match around the half hour mark as a result of another defensive error.

The Cameroon side were caught napping as a 60 yard pass made it’s way to Rommedahl on the left wing. Taking the ball in his stride, he evaded the fullback and whipped a low ball across the face of goal, for Bendtner to side foot home.

The Denmark goal changed the complexion of the game, and gave them a renewed belief that they could take all three points. It was end to end stuff right up to half time, chance after chance falling to both sets of strikers, but without any further changes to the scoresheet until after the break.

The lions of Cameroon seemed to take inspiration from the half time words from manager Paul Le Guen as they came out with all guns blazing in pursuit of a winner. Denmark held on and defended bravely as Cameroon looked increasingly frustrated at their failure to convert more of their chances.

The inevitable happened as Denmark broke up the park and punished the Africans for missing so many chances. Bendtner turned provider, picking the ball up on the half way line and sending a piercing pass through to Rommedahl on the left wing. The experienced Dane controlled well and flashed past the full back, cutting inside and bending the ball into the far post on the 62nd minute.

Cameroon continued to throw everything but the kitchen sink at Denmark, but nothing was going to give. They had no less than 23 efforts on goal, but still didn’t look like scoring. The disappointment was plain to see on the faces of the Cameroon players at full time, but the result now sets up a tantalising head to head between Japan and Denmark to see who will progress to the knockout stages.
