All the stories in this book are adapted from real news stories published in the Bangkok Post. I have tried to retain much of the original vocabulary and even many of the original sentences. Indeed, when you read the stories, they should seem quite natural.

I have simplified them, however. First of all, each news story is shortened, often by 50 per cent or more. Thus, very few of the stories in this book exceed four hundred words, with most in the 300 – 400 words range. I have also reorganized the stories, making them easier to follow. I have cut out unnecessary or complicated details and, finally, I have given each story a new and easier-to-understand introduction. The result is easy English news.

You also want to understand each story, of course, and that is why there is a question section at the end. The questions are not meant to be especially difficult or tricky. Instead, they are there to help make sure you catch the main idea of each story and its essential details.

The vocabulary activity will take a bit more time. It takes effort to understand and remember new vocabulary and this activity forces you to think carefully about the words that have been explained for you. You will also notice I have added a crossword puzzle at the end of each section to give you another vocabulary review.

The book contains a CD with mp3 sound files for each of the texts. This is an important part of the package and I strongly suggest you listen to them, preferably after you have read a text at least once. The sound files will help you better understand and remember what you read and they will give you a good start at understanding native speakers of English.
